Our “A Rewarding New York Life” series shines a light on the breadth of opportunity available at New York Life and explores how a role here could check a lot of boxes when it comes to finding a rewarding career and nailing that work-life balance.
With a history spanning over 176 years, New York Life is an insurance company that thrives on its people. And when it comes to group life insurance, New York Life has been protecting employees and their families for several decades.
In 2020, with the acquisition of Cigna’s group insurance business, New York Life took an exciting step. This was the largest acquisition in the company’s history and resulted in what is now known as New York Life Group Benefit Solutions (GBS).
We spoke to a group of our dynamic GBS employees about who they are, what they do, and how New York Life supports their personal and professional goals.
Before entering the world of insurance five years ago, Mario Hill worked in sales and customer service—experiences he excelled at as a self-proclaimed “people person.” These experiences, along with his knack for developing strong relationships, helped him to be quickly promoted to Team Leader in the GBS Contact Center after joining New York Life in 2020. Here, Mario discusses the New York Life culture from the professional support the company provides to his relationships with colleagues.
My work-life balance is great here. Not working weekends or late nights gives me enough time to be with my friends and family and do the things I love.”
—Mario Hill.
In his spare time, Mario is passionate about personal fitness. For him, exercise is a chance to “rejuvenate his body and his mind.” This holistic approach to lifestyle explains why the healthy work-life balance he’s found with New York Life is of particular appeal. In addition to the gym, Mario enjoys spending time with his wife and two dogs, as well as watching football!
“My work-life balance is great here. Not working weekends or late nights gives me enough time to be with my friends and family and do the things I love.”
“I am able to plan more freely throughout the year for days off and vacations, as I have a set schedule which I truly enjoy.”
Mario’s core responsibilities include team motivation, assisting with the interview process for potential new candidates, and working with other employees to help them grow. He enjoys working with people, and for him the biggest reward arrives when a member of his team is ready for a promotion.
In Mario’s opinion, there are certain qualities that a person suited to a career in an insurance contact center possesses.
“I think you need to be someone who is compassionate, patient, and looking for a rewarding career.”
As a New York Life Team Leader, Mario is eager to ensure his team feels supported and that lines of communication are open.
“My team is definitely big on having an open-door policy. They can discuss anything with me that is affecting their work or their work environment. And we are also open as far as life outside of work. My team will talk to me about their family or any issues affecting their work-life balance, so we can find solutions.”
This approach is something Mario finds across the board at New York Life and is particularly apparent when he has contact with other parts of the company.
“Anytime I speak with someone in New York Life outside of the contact center, they are always incredibly helpful. It is always someone who cares, not only how your day is going, but also how your career is going. They ask if they can help you now and in general.”
Mario has also found that professional development is encouraged at New York Life, where he feels learning and improvement are an important part of the overall culture.
“There are a number of learning programs offered, giving you the opportunity to grow professionally. They have manager programs that help you learn how to engage with your team, how to motivate your team, and how to strategize as far as your day-to-day tasks.”
And what about his experiences with the company in general?
“They create an employee-centric environment where they are always reaching out just to make sure that everyone's on the same page. I’d absolutely recommend a career with New York Life to a friend. When you join New York Life, you’re joining a family.”
