OUR PEOPLE
New York Life | October 2, 2024
The Day in a New York Life article series offers a look into the daily lives of employees: what they do, their career paths, what they find most interesting about their jobs, and how they spend their time outside of the office.
The Media & Channels team in Marketing is responsible for New York Life’s holistic social media strategy. This includes social listening, content production, and analytics.
In her role, Angela Martin is responsible for managing and executing on that strategy. “I take the ideas generated by the team, produce the content, and publish it. I also manage the person who is responsible for our social listening, which involves monitoring and analyzing what people are saying about New York Life on social media,” said Martin. Her team also handles all of the comments and direct messages on New York Life’s social media channels.
“I double majored in Marketing Management and Finance, and all of my internships were in the entertainment industry,” she said. Her first jobs out of college were marketing roles at website and digital media companies. “When I started at my second job, audiences had really started shifting from going to websites as the primary place to consume content to social media, and there I started to manage social-first campaigns for clients,” she said.
While Martin loved where she was working, at that point, the company was a startup. Martin realized she wanted something more stable. “During that time, we didn’t have traditional benefits like life insurance or a 401(k) option. Also, as a startup you never knew if you would wake up to an email saying that the company was suddenly acquired,” she said. Her office happened to be across the street from the New York Life Building. “I would see people walk into the New York Life building every day who looked happy, so I decided to learn more about the company. Then I applied online, and it checked all the boxes,” Martin said.
For Martin, the best thing about her role is that it’s different every day. “Some days I'm writing scripts and filming videos for TikTok. Other days we're creating presentations. I also travel to different locations to film activations for sponsorship events. The variety is exciting and keeps me on my toes,” she said. In addition, social media is always evolving. “I enjoy keeping up with the trends and the changes to platforms and regulations,” she added.
Martin says the best piece of career advice she’s gotten is to remember that feedback isn’t personal. “I know sometimes people are afraid of feedback because it feels very personal, but really it's an opportunity to develop and grow, so ask for it and welcome it,” she said.
When she’s not in the office, Martin says she loves going to Disney World. “I go at least twice a year,” she said. “Another fun fact about me is that I'm a dual American and Italian citizen.”
I grab my coffee and catch up on news to see if anything happened overnight that could impact content. Social media is 24/7.
I like to walk to the office from my home, which takes about 40 minutes.
I use this time to catch up on emails.
I check on my active content submissions with Compliance to see if my content is approved. I also I meet with Jordan Rehe on my team to review approved scripts and content.
Jordan and I film the approved content. We set up all the equipment, like tripods and lights and mics — all that fun stuff. We’re also the talent, so it can be intense.
When we’re done filming, we catch up with other teams, like the Digital Acquisition Team or the Field & Solutions Marketing Team, to see if they have any requests or updates on programs we’re working on.
I use my lunch as downtime because filming can be intense and I interact with colleagues most of the day. I love to grab a sandwich and walk around Madison Square Park.
In the afternoon, I catch up with the Sponsorship Team to discuss any content needs from our partners, like what we should be talking about, what’s trending, etc. I also meet with folks in Corporate Communications to see if we need to create content for any company news that’s coming down the pike.
I use the last part of my day for focused work time, when I produce content. For example, I might edit and publish the content we filmed in the morning, or build a LinkedIn or Facebook post and publish it.
I catch up with Charitie Dantis-Gayo in Marketing Strategy, who I assist in leading Marketing's employee engagement activities. We discuss upcoming events and brainstorm new ones to schedule.
I head home for the day.
