What is Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance?
AD&D can help provide financial protection for you and your family if you are involved in an accident that leads to death or bodily dismemberment including loss of specific senses such as sight, speech or hearing.
Why is AD&D a popular choice?
Cost. Group AD&D Insurance is a valuable way to provide protection for your family should an accident occur. Since benefits are limited to accidents, your premium costs are lower compared to other types of life insurance. That makes this an option that can fit into most household budgets.
Who is eligible for AD&D coverage?
This coverage is available to members and their spouse under age [xx], as well as any unmarried, dependent children under age [xx] or age [xx] if they attend school full-time (subject to state variations).
Who receives the insurance benefit?
Money from any qualifying claim goes directly to you or to your beneficiary—not to a doctor or hospital. Benefits are paid regardless of any other insurance coverage you may have.
Is my health considered for approval?
No medical testing or exam is required and there are no health questions required to enroll. Your acceptance is guaranteed.
Are there any additional benefits?
Yes, there are some stand out features that make this insurance do more for you and your family depending on the nature of an accident. While some of these are benefits paid only in the event of loss of life, this is when you or your family may need extra money the most.
What’s not covered?
Accidents are just that—accidental and unpredictable. Benefits are not payable for any loss that results from or is caused directly, indirectly, wholly or partly by suicide or intentionally self-inflicted injury; insurrection, war or an act of war; a physical or mental sickness or treatment of that sickness; voluntary intake of poison, drugs, gas or fumes, unless taken as prescribed by a physician; committing a crime or an attempt to do so; being intoxicated or under the influence of any drug, unless taken as prescribed by a physician; flight in any type of aircraft (this item applies only to the pilot, whether licensed or unlicensed, and the members of the crew). More detailed policy materials are available upon request.
When will my coverage begin?
All coverage issued will be effective on the [first of the month] following receipt of your enrollment form and your first premium payment. You and your dependents, if enrolling for family coverage, must not be hospitalized on the date your insurance takes effect. If you are, the insurance will take effect on the day after you are discharged.
How is accidental death and dismemberment insurance different from life insurance and travel accident insurance? While life insurance provides a benefit at death including and most typically natural causes, AD&D policies pay benefits only if you are injured or die in an accident. Generally, travel accident insurance pays benefits for accidental death only while you are a passenger on commercial transportation (common carriers), whereas AD&D insurance also covers deaths as well as many injuries from virtually any type of accident.

But while you may be able to help reduce the risk of the first three leading causes, the fourth can arrive unexpectedly. (Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022)

One family’s decision: The policy that made all the difference* Jim and Susana are married with three children. They led an active lifestyle, playing outdoor sports and taking regular beach excursions. They purchased AD&D insurance for each family member, which proved a good decision when Susana suffered a fatal accident. Left to raise their children as a single dad, Jim was able to care for their kids thanks, in large part, to $250,000 in accidental death benefits. And since their oldest child was going off to college that year, the benefit even increased and continued to help offset his education. *This is a hypothetical example.
