Grant Funds New Program To Offer Services For Teens Aging Out Of Foster Care
NEW YORK, N.Y., July 14, 2006 — The Children’s Aid Society announced today a $102,000 grant from the New York Life Foundation. The grant will help young people, ages 14-24, in foster care, make a successful transition to adulthood and self-sufficiency by participating in The Next Generation Center’s intensive programming.
“This grant from the New York Life Foundation will help provide youth who are ‘aging out’ of the foster care system with information and skills that will aid their efforts to achieve self-sufficiency,” said C. Warren Moses, chief executive officer, The Children’s Aid Society. “The direct support they receive will help them at a critical stage in their lives.”
“We are pleased to support a program that helps youth with the challenges faced as they transition from the foster care system to a life as independent adults,” said Peter Bushyeager, president of the New York Life Foundation. “By providing a comprehensive array of services ranging from career, health, and housing to financial management, The Next Generation Center will help young adults make a successful transition to independent living.”
According to the Administration for Children’s Services, every year 1,100 young people “age out” of New York City’s foster care system. Without family or responsible adults to lean on, these youth are left to make the transition to adulthood alone and unsupported, without basic skills.
The Children’s Aid Society’s new “one-stop” Next Generation Center, located in the Bronx, will help these youth complete their education, gain employment, find housing, get health and mental health care, and learn life skills. This grant will support the implementation of three multifaceted programs at the Center that include educational workshops, financial management and leadership training.
The Children’s Aid Society, founded in 1853, serves more than 150,000 children and their families each year, often helping them overcome tremendous odds.
