Six Westchester County Nonprofits Receive Funding As Part Of $250,000 Commitment For 2006
NEW YORK, N.Y., July 6, 2006 – The New York Life Foundation announced grants totaling $119,300 to six Westchester County nonprofits at a breakfast reception held at the Westchester campus of New York Life Insurance Company. They are part of the Foundation’s annual $250,000 commitment to Westchester nonprofits.
“I am pleased that the New York Life Foundation is supporting these deserving organizations,” said Fred Sievert, president of New York Life Insurance Company. “Each of these programs helps children in Westchester by providing vital educational, recreational and leadership opportunities.”
“The Foundation is proud to fund these exemplary nonprofits,” said Peter Bushyeager, president, New York Life Foundation. “They exemplify the Foundation’s Nurturing the Children initiative, which is dedicated to helping children acquire the skills they need to become successful, productive adults.”
The grant recipients are as follows:
- Child Care Council of Westchester - $25,000 to fund a summer literacy initiative that will benefit up to 200 children from low-income families at 10 nonprofits in Westchester;
- Girl Scouts of Westchester & Putnam - $20,500 to fund a pilot program that will provide extending Girl Scout programming at 10 after-school sites countywide;
- Mental Health Association of Westchester - $15,000 to provide enrichment activities and increase recruitment and training of adult mentors and for the “One-To-One Mentoring” program for troubled youth;
- The White Plains Library - $22,900 to support the formalization of an after-school academic enrichment program for at-risk youth at “The Trove” children’s library;
- Westhab - $15,900 to pilot College Material, which provides higher education support and guidance to homeless teenagers who want to pursue a college education; and
- YWCA of White Plains and Central Westchester - $20,000 to support an additional day of programming each week for the “Little Sisters” component of Girls Empowerment through Meaningful Support (GEMS).
The New York Life Foundation is the major vehicle through which New York Life Insurance Company channels contributions to national and local nonprofit organizations. Through its Nurturing the Children initiative, the Foundation supports organizations, programs and services that target young people, particularly in the areas of mentoring, safe places to learn and grow, and educational enhancement opportunities.
At the reception, Frederick Sievert, president, New York Life Insurance Company, awarded the grants to representatives from each nonprofit organization.
